Airbnb is Re-Sending Old Messages to Hosts and Guests

I woke up this morning to a string of confused messages from old Airbnb guests and hosts. In the early hours of the morning, the Airbnb system appears to have started resending old texts and emails from trips and enquiries that originally took place up to two years ago.

Worryingly, some of the messages appear to have been send to random recipients. I’m particularly concerned about the phone call I got from Papua New Guinea first thing this morning, a country I have never hosted or stayed in.

And it isn’t just me:

This looks like a rogue script at best, and a massive data protection infringement at worst. Let me know your experiences in the comments.

Update: Airbnb has blamed this on “an issue with the SMS system”. I asked about the data protection issue, but Airbnb did not address it directly.
